Polar Loop: A Long-Term Scientific Review – Is It a Real WHOOP Alternative?
In the world of screenless fitness trackers, the WHOOP strap has long been the king of the "Quantified Self." But with its subscription-based model, many are looking for a one-time purchase alternative. Enter the Polar Loop.
After months of rigorous testing, I’ve compared the Polar Loop against its primary rivals: the Amazfit Helio Strap and the WHOOP Strap. Does the Polar Loop have what it takes to compete, or is it trailing behind?
The Price of Performance
The Polar Loop sits in the middle of the market at approximately $200 (with no subscription required) [01:02]. This makes it more expensive than the budget-friendly Amazfit Helio ($99) but significantly cheaper over time than the WHOOP, which requires a monthly membership fee [01:14].
Heart Rate Tracking: The "Biceps Factor"
The most critical discovery during my testing was the difference in accuracy based on where you wear the device.
Indoor Cycling & Running
When worn on the wrist, the Polar Loop struggled significantly with heart rate correlation [03:39]. However, once moved to the biceps, the performance skyrocketed.
Indoor Cycling: Achieved a near-perfect 0.99 correlation with an ECG chest strap [03:52].

Running: On the biceps, the Loop held its own against top-tier devices like the Apple Watch Ultra and Pixel Watch [05:28].
The Outdoor Cycling Struggle
Surprisingly, the Polar Loop performed poorly during outdoor cycling, even when worn on the biceps [06:11]. This is likely due to the "bumpiness" and vibrations of the road, which seem to interfere with Polar's sensor more than competitors like the Apple Watch [06:39].
Outdoor biking is not very good….
Automatic Workout Detection: Not Quite There
While the "Loop" is designed to be a "set it and forget it" device, the automatic workout detection still has some quirks.
Splitting Workouts: If you take a 2–3 minute break during an interval session, the device often splits your session into two separate workouts [07:33].
Detection Lag: It can take several minutes—sometimes half the workout—to realize you’ve started exercising [09:21].
For the most accurate data, I recommend manually starting your workouts on the device whenever possible [03:04].

Sleep Stage Tracking: How Reliable Is It?
To test sleep, I compared the Polar Loop against the Zmax EEG headband (a silver standard for brainwave measurement) [11:31].
Deep Sleep: 71% agreement with the reference device (Solid) [12:01].
Light Sleep: 65% agreement (Decent) [12:16].
REM Sleep: Only 41% agreement (Poor) [12:16].
Overall, the Polar Loop’s sleep tracking is comparable to Garmin's current performance [16:44]. It’s a capable second-tier tracker, though it hasn't yet caught up to the precision of Apple or the Oura Ring [14:56].
The App Experience & Data Privacy
One area where Polar is currently lagging is the app. The interface feels a bit outdated compared to the modern, data-rich WHOOP experience [17:22]. However, a major update is expected in 2026.
One major advantage for European users: Data Privacy. As a Finnish company, Polar stores your data within the EU, which is a significant plus for those wary of sending health data to the US or China [17:55].
Final Verdict
The Polar Loop is a strong contender if you are willing to wear it on your biceps for workouts [16:54].
Get it if: You want a one-time purchase, value EU data privacy, and primarily do indoor cycling or running.
Skip it if: You are a dedicated outdoor cyclist or want the most advanced, user-friendly app experience currently available.
